Thyroid health is influenced by hormones, immune activity, genetics, and other factors. TPO antibodies provide a window into one part of that picture: thyroid autoimmunity.
High TPO antibodies are commonly associated with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. In Hashimoto’s, the immune system mistakenly attacks components of the thyroid. Over time, this can impair the gland's ability to produce thyroid hormones.
TPO antibodies may also be elevated in Graves’ disease, although Graves’ has a different primary antibody mechanism.
Another condition to consider is postpartum thyroiditis. This inflammatory condition can occur after pregnancy and may cause temporary changes in thyroid function.
Some people have elevated TPO antibodies even when their thyroid hormone tests are normal. This is important because antibody positivity does not automatically equal hypothyroidism.
The laboratory reference range also matters. Different laboratories may use different testing methods and reference ranges, so results should be interpreted according to the range provided by the laboratory.
Rather than trying to lower a number without understanding its meaning, it is better to identify whether there is underlying thyroid dysfunction and monitor appropriately.
